Providence’s virtual care and digital health portfolio includes a broad range of clinical products and services; thus, we have been afforded the opportunity to speak on a number of different aspects of care delivery at HIMSS. One of the talks I am looking forward to is about how to navigate the challenges of the clinical product development lifecycle within a large and complex, non-profit health system. The journey to create and launch a product from prototype to pilot to scale will be illustrated with a case study of incubating the digital assistant and clinical content management system called MedPearl at Providence. The product started with the need to knowledge share within the clinician community and has evolved to into a clinical education and referral platform integrated with the EMR that supercharges clinical decision making and next best actions at the point of care. MedPearl uses generative AI to deliver digestible and specialized knowledge personalized to a patient’s EMR data, advising clinicians to make accurate and appropriate referrals.
Understanding the clinical product development lifecycle is critical for our health systems leaders to leverage in addressing today’s healthcare challenges. Developing tools within our own system’s walls can effectively transform the way healthcare is delivered, reason enough for clinical innovation to be top of mind for health system leadership.
In my speaking sessions, I will deliver practical insights guiding the journey from innovation to scale. Three of the most important learnings I will share are to clearly define the problem, to ensure executive sponsorship, and to align the product roadmap with your institution’s strategic goals. During this session, I will share additional learnings that will be beneficial to any clinical product team, whether internal or external to a health system, as they seek to bring a solution forward.
