Joanne Sunquist, CIO, Hennepin County Medical Center

Joanne Sunquist, CIO, Hennepin County Medical Center

In what has become an interesting debate among CIOs — which to do first: CPOE or bedside bar-coded eMAR — smart individuals are coming down passionately on both sides. It’s also interesting that more than a few intrepid souls are counseling both should be done at the same time, though bandwidth constraints leave that group in the minority. Certainly not a “CPOE Last” believer, Hennepin County Medical Center CIO Joanne Sunquist says “the biggest bang for the buck, in terms of cost savings and error reduction, is in CPOE.” Sunquist, who has implemented CPOE with eMAR (she’s just starting bar-coding now) recently chatted with healthsystemCIO.com Anthony Guerra to share more about her prioritization when it comes to implementing advanced clinical technologies.

Chapter 1

Chapter 2 — CPOE and order sets, Epic, clinical decision support, clinical analytics, business intelligence and analytics, the HITECH bar (it’s just fine), why Epic shops are happy shops, CHIME and the importance of staying engaged with industry organizations, HIMSS & HITECH
