As ONC looks to bring healthcare IT to the entire country — including every one-doc practice in small town USA — a key weapon in its arsenal is the Regional Extension Center. These organizations are going to dot the country, serving as EHR selection, implementation and Meaningful Use consultants for small practices taking care of underserved populations and rural communities. With the first wave of REC “cooperative agreements” announced and a second way on the way, it’ll soon be time to hang some Grand Opening signs and open the doors for business. One man tasked with making sure 100,000 providers are meaningfully using EHRs by 2011 is Joshua Seidman, acting director of the Meaningful Use Division in ONC’s Office of Provider Adoption Support.
