<itunes:summary>When Jim Noga was named CIO at Partners HealthCare, taking over for John Glaser, he was no stranger to the system, having spent 17 as CIO at Massachusetts General. A year later, he’s focused on moving the organization from a federated model to a true enterprise clinical system approach that will better facilitate initiatives like accountable care. In this interview, Noga talks about fostering clinical collaboration within the organization, the importance of having an effective mobile device management strategy, and how he has benefited from his experience in software development. He also talks about the challenges organizations face in managing security, why confrontation and conflict can sometimes be good, and what it has been like to fill Glaser’s shoes.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>As someone with nearly three decades of health IT experience, Mary Anne Leach knows that accomplishing anything worthwhile means being willing to learn from the past, and not being afraid to lead the way. Children’s Hospital Colorado was one of the first pediatric hospitals to fully implement an EHR and was a participant in Colorado’s first RHIO. Now, the organization is drawing from that experience to help build an improved HIE, and leveraging its relationship with Epic to extend its pediatric network. In this interview, Leach talks about the complex Meaningful Use picture in Colorado, how Children’s is partnering with vendors to develop a clinician-friendly mobile device strategy, why it’s critical to participate in advocacy initiatives, and how her background has given her a “well-rounded view.”</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>As a mother of six, Laishy Williams-Carlson knows a thing or two about multitasking and prioritizing — and she better, because of the 18 hospitals that are part of the $3 billion Bon Secours Health System, 14 are implementing Epic. And as Williams-Carlson has learned, dividing her time between the hospitals that are already live and those in the earlier stages is not easy, especially since the facilities are spread out across the Eastern seaboard. In this interview, Williams-Carlson talks about dealing with different cultures at different hospitals, maintaining the delicate balance between security and access needs, the benefits of having a financial background, and the importance of having go-to people on the clinical side. She also discusses the challenges in dealing with physicians who use different systems, and why conference calls can never replace face-to-face interactions.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The transformation of HIPAA from a toothless herbivore into a fierce meat-eater began with a few high-profile prosecutions that concluded in significant fines. Since that time, the government has been working to add ever more claws to this growing beast. The most recent of those has been an accounting of disclosures NPRM, which seeks to define exactly what type of information a patient is entitled to regarding access to their EHR after their hospital stay. The NPRM created a firestorm of response, largely critical, due to the onus it would place on IT and compliance departments. But more than this one rule, healthcare organizations can see the writing on the wall, with CIOs understanding that security needs to be shored up, quickly and efficiently. To gauge what others are doing with respect to staff education on the dos and don'ts of security, Albany Medical Center EVP/CIO Buddy Hickman issued a survey to his fellow CHIMErs. To learn more about his motivation for issuing the survey, the results, and how he plans to turn lessons-learned into policies, healthsystemCIO.com caught up with the New York-based CIO.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>When John Glaser left his position as CIO at Partners HealthCare, he also left a vacancy in the weekly CHIME SmartBrief, where he was the voice of the CIO. It was a void that CHIME’s leaders felt could only be filled by someone who had both years of industry experience and a firm grasp on legislative issues. They chose Bill Spooner, a 25-year veteran who has earned recognition from HIMSS and other organizations for the IT initiatives that have helped transformed San Diego-based Sharp Healthcare into one of the most advanced systems in the country. In this interview, Spooner talks about the work his team is doing at Sharp, how health reform presents both challenges and opportunities for CIOs, and why it is so critical for the provider community to serve as the voice of reason in the Meaningful Use debate.</itunes:summary>

He'd found success in all his career endeavors, made some money and bought some houses (a few in sunny Mexico). But one day Moore got an offer even he couldn't refuse. That offer came from Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, and Moore couldn't refuse it because, in it, he saw a unique opportunity to improve the healthcare of an entire community, an opportunity that "very, very, very few other places" could offer. <itunes:summary>Many hospitals started their path toward electronic medical records when HITECH and Meaningful Use became law in February 2009, but Trinitas Regional Medical Center isn't one of them. Under the leadership of Judy Comitto since it was formed through M&A in 2000, the health system has been continually at work building out its IT environment with Eclipsys at the core. Two years ago, Trinitas dove into the advanced clinicals end of the pool, and now sees 72 percent of its orders entered electronically. To learn more about the organizations decade-long march toward automation, healthsystemCIO.com editor Anthony Guerra recently caught up with his fellow New Jerseyian.</itunes:summary>

The evolving patchwork of privacy and security regulations is making the difficult job of creating health information exchanges (HIEs) even more so, according to a panel of experts at the New Jersey and Delaware HIMSS fall event held in Atlantic City. "Privacy and security laws are right now being reinvented, reinterpreted, stretched, morphed and developed," said Helen Oscislawski, founder of Attorneys at Oscislawski, LLC. Those changes are happening at the federal, as well as state, level, where the HIT Policy Committee's Privacy and Security Tiger Team is crafting recommendations that may appear in Stages 2 and 3 of Meaningful Use. <itunes:summary>Though HITECH may have some questioning their physician integration strategy — especially the part about underwriting EMRs using the Stark relaxations — it hasn't deterred Inova Health and its CIO Geoff Brown one bit. In fact, Brown thinks strengthening those key relationships is more important than ever. Heartened by the industry's move towards standards and a world in which everyone seems content to "play in the same sandbox," he's extremely bullish on IT's ability to improve healthcare in his neck of the woods — Northern Virginia. To learn more about Brown's plans to develop a robust healthcare ecosystem that goes far beyond the walls of Inova's facilities, healthsystemCIO.com editor Anthony Guerra recently caught up with the long-time executive.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>After 14 years with St. Claire Regional Medical Center, you might think Randy McCleese has done it all, but you'd be wrong. That's because the CIO is just now embarking on a new core clinical install with a vendor he hasn't worked with before — Meditech. And McCleese isn't dipping his toe into the Meditech pool, but jumping right in, bypassing many of the CIOs he met at a recent Meditech Users Group (MUSE) meeting and going straight to 6.0. It's an exciting time for McCleese, installing a new inpatient system, working on the local HIE and staying active in HIMSS and CHIME. Recently, he took a few minutes to talk with healthsystemCIO.com editor Anthony Guerra about all of the above, and so much more.</itunes:summary>

To learn more about what a former baking IT executive thinks of healthcare’s technology environment, healthsystemCIO.com editor Anthony Guerra recently chatted with Veltri about these topics, and so much more.</itunes:summary>
