<itunes:summary>Every hospital CIO is undoubtedly feeling the burden of Meaningful Use, but for some, the weight is greater. As Tom Ciccarelli, CIO of East Orange General Hospital, leads the 211-bed, community hospital through EMR implementations and other major projects, he is finding that organizations that are on a tight budget — and can’t afford consulting help — really are at a disadvantage. In this interview, Ciccarelli speaks candidly about how the combination of ICD-10 and Stage 2 of Meaningful Use will overwhelm hospitals, how vendor flexibility can be a double-edged sword, and the effect that changing workflows and an increased data entry burden has on clinicians. He also talks about the similarities between EMR implementations and having young children, and the critical attributes needed for today’s CIOs.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>For Cathy Crowley, the path that took her to the CIO position at Columbia Memorial Hospital wasn’t a typical one. It was the economic downturn that steered her away from consulting and into the temporary position that eventually became full-time, but it was her proficiency for implementations and multitasking that has kept her there. Crowley is leading the way as Columbia Memorial Hospital — a 192-bed acute care facility that includes a long-term care site and several practices — seeks to achieve interoperability despite having three different systems. In this interview, she discusses how her organization has been able to leverage government dollars, the challenges in working with community practices, and the importance of being able to navigate the hospital politics involved in vendor selection.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Like many CIOs, Jackie Lucas believes Meaningful Use is the right thing to do because it’s moving the industry forward. But she also believes the planning and execution of such a major initiative left something to be desired. Lucas would have liked to see a more holistic, layered approach to health IT that addressed workflow concerns — something more like the deliberate strategy that she has tried to implement at Baptist Healthcare. In this interview, Lucas talks about the challenges community hospitals face in adopting CPOE and meeting quality measures, the experiences she has had in maintaining multiple vendor partnerships, and what healthcare CIOs can learn from other industries.</itunes:summary>

First off, they're telling him a close-knit relationship between his hospital and the independent physicians which send it patients is key. They're also telling him that tight integration which facilitates seamless data flow among his applications is becoming all important. While interfaces have gotten him some communication between his Meditech inpatient and GE Centricity ambulatory EHRs, it's not yet a perfect world. As such, he's giving LSS another look, both for reasons of integration and price. To learn more about his work to create a community health record, healthsystemCIO.com editor Anthony Guerra recently chatted with the Oklahoma-based executive.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Fast and easy are two words only the uninitiated would use to describe a core clinical HIT system selection, and John Gaede is certainly not one of them. That's because Gaede recently went through the rigors of crafting a vision, finding partners and hitting the market. And hit the market he did, scouring not only US software makers, but a few in Europe. After 2.5 years, during which his organization broke down and did site visits for 16 vendors, ECRMC got it down to four, then one. At the end, Siemens and its Soarian product won the contract not only for functionality, but a sound cultural fit and the right price. To learn more about his quest to find the right vendor/partner, healthsystemCIO.com editor Anthony Guerra recently chatted with the California-based CIO.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Many hospitals started their path toward electronic medical records when HITECH and Meaningful Use became law in February 2009, but Trinitas Regional Medical Center isn't one of them. Under the leadership of Judy Comitto since it was formed through M&A in 2000, the health system has been continually at work building out its IT environment with Eclipsys at the core. Two years ago, Trinitas dove into the advanced clinicals end of the pool, and now sees 72 percent of its orders entered electronically. While I still believe this as a general principle, a recent KLAS report on emergency department systems proves that every rule has its exception. The report found that while 31 percent of those using best-of-breed systems in the ED — meaning the system is from a different vendor than their EHR/Pharmacy/CPOE provider — would consider moving to the ED product offered by their enterprise vendor in the future, only 7 percent of those using an ED system from their core vendor would consider leaving it for a best-of-breed solution.

Source: Know the Rules, But Beware the Exceptions on healthsystemcio.com - healthsystemCIO.com is the sole online-only publication dedicated to exclusively and comprehensively serving the information needs of healthcare CIOs.

Additionally, CHIME is predicting that many hospitals will have a difficult time qualifying for stimulus funding in subsequent stages of the incentive program, "as objectives increase in number and become harder to meet, and as other aspects of the stimulus program become more challenging."

<itunes:summary>Though there are thousands of Meditech hospitals, only a handful are in the in the process of migrating from the Magic to 6.0 platform. Of course, those hospitals (and their CIOs) are being watched very closely by the Meditech community. One of those CIOs is Ed Ricks of Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Ricks is not only taking his facility to 6.0 and going best of breed in the ED, but using a new integration engine to bring it all together. To gather some lessons learned for healthsystemCIO.com readers, editor Anthony Guerra recently chatted with Ricks.</itunes:summary>

The folks at Meditech have been incredibly supportive of a very complex systems agenda at our site. A few weeks ago we went live with Siemens Soarian Financials and Scheduling, feeding our Meditech clinical systems. This two-year implementation was part of a corporate Soarian project and our hospital was the first site. The design is simple.
