<itunes:summary>Every hospital CIO is undoubtedly feeling the burden of Meaningful Use, but for some, the weight is greater. As Tom Ciccarelli, CIO of East Orange General Hospital, leads the 211-bed, community hospital through EMR implementations and other major projects, he is finding that organizations that are on a tight budget — and can’t afford consulting help — really are at a disadvantage. In this interview, Ciccarelli speaks candidly about how the combination of ICD-10 and Stage 2 of Meaningful Use will overwhelm hospitals, how vendor flexibility can be a double-edged sword, and the effect that changing workflows and an increased data entry burden has on clinicians. He also talks about the similarities between EMR implementations and having young children, and the critical attributes needed for today’s CIOs.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Stephen Stewart is one of many CIOs who believe that Meaningful Use is happening too quickly. In fact, he believes that delaying Stage 2 isn’t just a smart idea; it’s a necessary step to avoid the perfect storm of requirements that would inevitably cause undue stress. In this interview, the CIO of Henry County Health Center — a southwest Iowa-based system that includes a 25-bed critical access hospital, a long-term care facility, and physician offices — talks about the process of attesting to Stage 1, his organization’s EMR journey, and the benefits and drawbacks of being a small facility. He also provides insights on why it’s better to lead than to manage, how to handle pushback from physicians, and what it takes to cultivate an environment that enables the staff to thrive.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Fast and easy are two words only the uninitiated would use to describe a core clinical HIT system selection, and John Gaede is certainly not one of them. That's because Gaede recently went through the rigors of crafting a vision, finding partners and hitting the market. And hit the market he did, scouring not only US software makers, but a few in Europe. After 2.5 years, during which his organization broke down and did site visits for 16 vendors, ECRMC got it down to four, then one. <itunes:summary>When Tom Ciccarelli created a team of clinician-users to select a system that would help the hospital achieve Meaningful Use, he didn’t expect them to come back asking for Centricity from GE. That’s because GE’s KLAS scores — a performance indicator Ciccarelli references to help navigate the vendor landscape — have been lackluster of late. But rather than dismissing the recommendation out of hand, Ciccarelli went through a rigorous due diligence process with the vendor, including site visits and frank conversations with GE leadership about those disappointing scores. What he found during the process gave the CIO enough confidence to move forward, and today East Orange is in the process of implementing Centricity. To learn more about this, healthsystemCIO.com editor Anthony Guerra recently caught up with Ciccarelli.</itunes:summary>

QUESTION: "What vendors would you recommend for a Critical Access Hospital (CAH) of 25 beds?" That's easy: just look at vendors whose client base consists mainly of 25 bed CAHs: The "Big 3" are CPSI, Healthland and HMS, who each have hundreds of CAH facilities each; indeed, these three small-hospital leaders have few clients over 100 beds in size! They feature strong integration, offering almost every financial and clinical application, obviating costly interfaces. CPSI even has a self-developed PACS and T & A system. HMS just bought superb ED vendor "MedHost,"

Source: Ask the Pros: Best Critical Access Hospital Vendor? on healthsystemcio.com - healthsystemCIO.com is the sole online-only publication dedicated to exclusively and comprehensively serving the information needs of healthcare CIOs.
