<itunes:summary>One of the dictums often spoken at Children’s Hospital and Medical Center is that “pediatric patients are not just small adults.” Children come with a whole different set of needs — from a lack of standard dosing to communication challenges — that must be factored in when implementing IT systems. These considerations are taking a front seat as Children’s migrates to a new EHR platform. In this interview, George Reynolds, MD, talks about the work his organization is doing to connect with affiliated physicians as well as other health systems, and the decision support system that’s being rolled out to improve patient care. He also talks about managing the dual roles of CIO and CMIO, the benefits of having clinician experience under his belt, the importance of IT rounding and appointing physician champions, and why networking is more critical now than ever before.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>When he was named CIO at Southern Illinois Healthcare three years ago, two of Dave Holland’s key goals were to reverse the trend of project delays at the five-hospital organization, and to help narrow the gap between IT and clinicians staff. His team is addressing both issues by surging ahead with a big Meditech upgrade and establishing a rounding system that will enable the IT staff to better understand how implementations impact clinicians. In the meantime, Holland is focused on building an HIE within the organization, establishing a PHO to improve outcomes for chronic disease patients, and driving EHR adoption among physicians. In this interview, Holland talks about the HIE picture in Illinois, transitioning to a true EHR environment that will enable clinical decision support, and what it takes to change the culture of an organization.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>As someone with nearly three decades of health IT experience, Mary Anne Leach knows that accomplishing anything worthwhile means being willing to learn from the past, and not being afraid to lead the way. Children’s Hospital Colorado was one of the first pediatric hospitals to fully implement an EHR and was a participant in Colorado’s first RHIO. Now, the organization is drawing from that experience to help build an improved HIE, and leveraging its relationship with Epic to extend its pediatric network. In this interview, Leach talks about the complex Meaningful Use picture in Colorado, how Children’s is partnering with vendors to develop a clinician-friendly mobile device strategy, why it’s critical to participate in advocacy initiatives, and how her background has given her a “well-rounded view.”</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>To say that there is a strong focus on innovation at Vanderbilt University Medical Center would be quite an understatement. In fact, it’s more like a way of life at the academic medical center, which includes an acute care hospital, children’s hospital, clinic, and cancer center. If there is a tool that clinicians need, the IT team will determine whether it can be developed in-house before turning to a vendor. For Deputy CIO George McCulloch, this type of environment may be challenging, but it’s also deeply rewarding. In this interview, McCulloch talks about balancing the needs of different constituents, how practicing medicine is both an art and a science, the importance of working to meet the needs of specialists, and his organization’s road to Meaningful Use.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Though there are thousands of Meditech hospitals, only a handful are in the in the process of migrating from the Magic to 6.0 platform. Of course, those hospitals (and their CIOs) are being watched very closely by the Meditech community. One of those CIOs is Ed Ricks of Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Ricks is not only taking his facility to 6.0 and going best of breed in the ED, but using a new integration engine to bring it all together. To gather some lessons learned for healthsystemCIO.com readers, editor Anthony Guerra recently chatted with Ricks.</itunes:summary>

The field of biomedical is full of acronyms — CPOE, HIE, EMR, HL7 — that may be interesting to IT professionals, but merely connote longer days, multiple logins and frustration for clinicians. While people in "healthcare" love it concept of CPOE, physicians feel it slow them down and turns them from docs into secretaries. I recently gave a ground rounds to our large children’s hospital to explain how biomedical informatics is evolving. There is a plan in my mind of how CPOE, HIE, etc., can come together leveraging bar code medication administration and actionable alerts, to prevent beside safety issues and improve care. What will also emerge is quality reporting which can provide data for large scale research.

Source: A Systems Engineering Approach to Biomed Informatics on healthsystemcio.com - healthsystemCIO.com is the sole online-only publication dedicated to exclusively and comprehensively serving the information needs of healthcare CIOs.

<itunes:summary>Greg Walton, CIO, El Camino Hospital
Implementing a few clinical systems isn’t going to get you applause at El Camino Hospital. That’s because the organization has “been there, done that,” implementing the first CPOE system some 40 years ago. Considering that tough crowd, the CIO role isn’t for newcomers, and Greg Walton is no newcomer. With 40 years in the business to match El Camino’s CPOE tenure, Walton is just the kind of CIO to take on a big challenge. In fact, soon after assuming the job in December 2007, Walton created the Center for Technology Integration to make sure the organization was up on the latest tools for improving patient care. To talk about this, and so much more, healthsystemCIO.com editor Anthony Guerra recently caught up with the California-based CIO.
Chapter 1
Chapter 2

Monitoring the horizon for new technologies
Embracing change and innovation
El Camino’s vendor environment
Closed system vs open source
Eclipsys, Medicity, Microsoft & the Apple Model
Why closed shops are happy – the cost
Is the future about analytics, not transactions?
When it comes to point-of-care analytics, “We’re nowhere”
Hospitals exist “in a controlled state of chaos”

<itunes:summary>In what has become an interesting debate among CIOs — which to do first: CPOE or bedside bar-coded eMAR — smart individuals are coming down passionately on both sides. It's also interesting that more than a few intrepid souls are counseling both should be done at the same time, though bandwidth constraints leave that group in the minority. Certainly not a "CPOE Last" believer, Hennepin County Medical Center CIO Joanne Sunquist says "the biggest bang for the buck, in terms of cost savings and error reduction, is in CPOE." Sunquist, who has implemented CPOE with eMAR (she's just starting bar-coding now) recently chatted with healthsystemCIO.com Anthony Guerra to share more about her prioritization when it comes to implementing advanced clinical technologies.</itunes:summary>
