<itunes:summary>As a CIO, having all hospitals within a health system on the same EMR is the ideal scenario. But as Todd Richardson knows, it isn’t always a reality, particularly when physicians are minority owners. In this interview, Richardson, who serves as CIO of the six-hospital Deaconess Health System, gives his honest take of how having physician owners can impact IT decision making, and why organizations need to accommodate the growing need among patients to access their data. He also talks about the flaws with statewide HIEs, the challenges of managing the different needs of device users, the IT rounding program his team implemented, and the importance of viewing technology as an enabler.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The regulatory requirements that CIOs are grappling with are overwhelming enough—throw in a major leadership change, and it can feel like being caught in a whirlwind. It’s how Kim Ligon felt when DCH Health System had a new CFO take the helm just as Meaningful Use was coming down the pike. But rather than panic, Ligon, who serves as CIO for the West Alabama-based system, reached out to her colleagues for help. What she found is that there is no better source than CIOs for issues like dealing with steering committees, prioritizing projects, and balancing the budget. In this interview, Ligon also talks about having to interface with physician offices that use different EMR systems, her role in developing a statewide HIE, when a project needs to be delayed, and why she believes nurses bear the biggest brunt of CPOE.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>When it comes to major IT projects, two of the most important pillars of success include putting the right team into place and being able to guide a project through a rough patch. Allana Cummings, CIO at Northeast Georgia Health System, has addressed these key issues by embedding clinicians in the IT department and applying a different approach to right projects that seem to be veering off course. In this interview, Cummings talks about the value of a collaborative approach to problem-solving that includes the vendor, the importance of effective communication, having all the right information, and knowing when to take a time-out. She also discusses the application environment at Northeast Georgia, best practices in fostering CPOE adoption, and her organization’s iPhone and iPad empowerment strategy.</itunes:summary>

If a patient fell in the woods and nobody heard him, so what?
I've spent a lot of time trying to understand what a patient is worth to a hospital over a period of, let us say, five to ten years. Simply put, what is the ROI of a patient? Apparently, no one has answered this question. If they have, the answer is well hidden. Why are hospital marketing departments continuously searching for new patients when they already have access to a ready supply of past and current patients? It will always be much cheaper to retain those patients than to try to acquire new ones.

Source: Patients Are Issuing RFPs – Are You Responding? on healthsystemcio.com - healthsystemCIO.com is the sole online-only publication dedicated to exclusively and comprehensively serving the information needs of healthcare CIOs.

And while he knew the organization had outsourced its IT shop to Siemens, Roth wasn’t aware of the "depth and breadth" of the agreement until he finally had a chance to read the fine print. As such, Roth and Pinnacle are hoping to rebalance that agreement with an eye toward shared risk. It does not have to be that way. HIT is not “binary sudoku”. In other words, your strategy is never limited to only doing ‘this’ or ‘that’. If that is where your organization finds itself, choosing between to unacceptable choices, or trying to decide between the lesser of two evils, your way out is to try to redefine your options, to chunk the problem—break the problem down into more workable chunks.

Source: Avoiding the Binary Trap on healthsystemcio.com - healthsystemCIO.com is the sole online-only publication dedicated to exclusively and comprehensively serving the information needs of healthcare CIOs.

<itunes:summary>Greg Walton, CIO, El Camino Hospital
Implementing a few clinical systems isn’t going to get you applause at El Camino Hospital. That’s because the organization has “been there, done that,” implementing the first CPOE system some 40 years ago. Considering that tough crowd, the CIO role isn’t for newcomers, and Greg Walton is no newcomer. With 40 years in the business to match El Camino’s CPOE tenure, Walton is just the kind of CIO to take on a big challenge. In fact, soon after assuming the job in December 2007, Walton created the Center for Technology Integration to make sure the organization was up on the latest tools for improving patient care. To talk about this, and so much more, healthsystemCIO.com editor Anthony Guerra recently caught up with the California-based CIO.
Chapter 1
Chapter 2

Monitoring the horizon for new technologies
Embracing change and innovation
El Camino’s vendor environment
Closed system vs open source
Eclipsys, Medicity, Microsoft & the Apple Model
Why closed shops are happy – the cost
Is the future about analytics, not transactions?
When it comes to point-of-care analytics, “We’re nowhere”
Hospitals exist “in a controlled state of chaos”

And while HITECH has certainly accelerated some of her plans, Albright never expected the job to be a walk in the park. As Albright says in the following interview with healthsystemCIO.com editor Anthony Guerra, a shaky infrastructure will keep any CIO up at night.

Dear HIS Pros: If a hospital plans to implement most core clinical applications, do you recommend a big-bang approach of turning everything on at once or an incremental one that involves doing a few applications a year over 2-3 years? Generally, it's best to convert the least you have to at any one time, to maximize the quality and minimize the trauma. "Big Bang" conversions often lead to resumes. Our usual recommendation is to implement a new HIS in 3 phases:

Source: When Implementing a HIS, Big Bang or Phases? on healthsystemcio.com - healthsystemCIO.com is the sole online-only publication dedicated to exclusively and comprehensively serving the information needs of healthcare CIOs.

<itunes:summary>Rick Lang, VP & CIO, Doylestown Hospital
Just over a month ago, 208-bed Doylestown Memorial Hospital got some big league attention as it was tagged by HIMSS Analytics with Stage 6 honors. But with the organization opening a new emergency department, CIO Rick Lang has little time to stop and celebrate. Lang and his team are hard at work rolling out NextGen to local docs — taking advantage of the Stark relaxations — and integrating those physicians into the hospital’s core Meditech environment. To learn more about how Lang has accomplished so much in the community hospital setting, healthsystemCIO.com editor Anthony Guerra recently caught up with the Pennsylvania-based CIO.
Chapter 1 (9:46) Topics Covered — Interesting history of Doylestown Community Hospital; Rick’s IT shop; Stark factor; main vendors used; Meditech 6.0; Meditech capacity challenges; Difficulty of implementing clinical systems quickly; Change management best practices Chapter 2 (11:13) Topics Covered — Change/project management; Setting expectations with finance; the Meaningful Use bar; Government’s comment process; Specific MU Concerns Chapter 3 (10:58) Topics Covered — Discussion of specific MU measures (CPOE vs eMAR); PHRs; opening up a new ED; role of CIO in change management/implementations: to lead or to follow?

As ONC looks to bring healthcare IT to the entire country — including every one-doc practice in small town USA — a key weapon in its arsenal is the Regional Extension Center. These organizations are going to dot the country, serving as EHR selection, implementation and Meaningful Use consultants for small practices taking care of underserved populations and rural communities. With the first wave of REC “cooperative agreements” announced and a second way on the way, it’ll soon be time to hang some Grand Opening signs and open the doors for business. One man tasked with making sure 100,000 providers are meaningfully using EHRs by 2011 is Joshua Seidman, acting director of the Meaningful Use Division in ONC’s Office of Provider Adoption Support. To learn more about how the REC program is evolving, healthsystemCIO.com editor Anthony Guerra recently chatted with Seidman.
